The cooperative La Toma recycles pieces from defunct information technology equipment (old computers, printers, etc.) La Toma has a large warehouse in Avellaneda outside of Buenos Aires and a qualification to emit documents certifying appropriate disposal of electronic residuals.

The factory was abandoned during december 2001 without paying salaries , social insurance and debts, the owners leaved all the workers unemployed. The people start to group and became a cooperative with a clear objective of recover the company. After this stage of chaos and desperation, they went to treat this emergency on the Senate forum to expropriate the building and to try to avoid the owners and others to destroy or steal the machinery , and finally start again with the productive process. Nowadays, some of them are still working on reconstruction.

These pictures shows the massive destruction of the factory caused by the people who try to steal the machinery , the work source of many people and their families.

Cooperative Mac Body : Recovered Textile

The Working World gave a loan which provide the textile cooperative Mac Body with the capital to purchase fabrics and pay labor costs for the confection of a substantial portion of the clothing articles (particularly long-sleeve shirts for men and women) for the 2009 Winter Collection.

Due to the general logic of the textile market, it is necessary to make a large investment during the summer season to ensure that at the start of the winter season all cold-weather articles are already on the shelves. As winter clothing is more expensive to produce, the start-up capital needed is greater. Moreover, providing wholesale clients with their clothing on time is important for good business. For these reasons, the coop needs to have as many articles as possible for the beginning of the season. On the other hand, the current economic crisis makes it quite difficult to predict sales for this year, for which reason this loan was prepared with special effort and care.

Cooperative Esperanza del Plata , plastic bags factory

The cooperative Esperanza del Plata is a recovered factory re-opened by its workers after being suddenly closed on Oct. 31 of 2008. 7 of the original 30 or so workers remained, and together they began to organize to run the plant.La Base has been working with Esperanza del Plata for the last year, helping to provide them with the capital needed to buy raw materials to produce. During this time we have seen a large improvement in the quality and sustainability of the business. This loan is identical to various that were made in 2009. It is short and small, intended to inject enough short-term capital into the cooperative to complete several pending orders and improve the overall liquidity of the business.
